MEASUREMENT OF THE HOUSEHOLD’S FINANCIAL DISTRESS AND WELL-BEING IN TURKEY

Abstract

The purpose of this study is measurement of household’s financial distress and well-being in Turkey by using the financial stress and financial welfare scale prepared by the Incharge Education Foundation in 2005. Also this study is to investigate whether demographic variables affect on the household’s financial distress and well-being. This study, the one-way ANOVA test for independent samples, the t-test, and the LSD test for multiple comparisons were employed to analyze whether the degree of financial distress and financial welfare changed according to demografic variables and whether there exists a notable association between these variables. This is understood that all of the questions asked to measure the financial stress and well-being of households in Turkey have changed in a statistically significant way, as stated in the hypotheses. In other words; the financial distress and well-being of the household changes significantly with its demographic variables such as gender, age, institution of employment, occupation, marital status, institution of health insurance, degree of education, mothers' and fathers' degree of education, monthly household income. According to the results of the study; male participants experience reduced financial strain levels and higher financial well-being levels compared to women; as age increases, financial distress levels decrease and well-being levels increase; lawyers, academics, workers, doctors, engineers, tradesmen or retired participants have lower financial stress levels and higher financial well-being levels in comparison with teachers or civil servants; married participants have lower financial stress levels and higher financial well-being levels compared to singles; as the degree of education increases, the degree of financial distress decreases and the final well-being level increases; as monthly household income increases, the degree of financial stress decreases and the degree of financial well-being increases.

TÜRKİYE’DE HANE HALKININ FİNANSAL SIKINTI VE REFAHININ ÖLÇÜLMESİ

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, 2005 yılında Incharge Eğitim Vakfı tarafından hazırlanan finansal stres ve finansal refah ölçeği kullanılarak Türkiye’deki hanehalkının finansal sıkıntı ve refahının ölçülmesi ve demografik değişkenlerin finansal sıkıntı ve finansal refah düzeyine etkisinin ölçülmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada, hanehalkının demografik özelliklerine göre hane halkının finansal sıkıntı ve finansal refah seviyesi değişip değişmediğinin yani bu iki değişken Aralarında anlamlı bir bağlantının olup olmadığını incelemek amacıyla ilişkisiz ölçümler için tek yönlü varyans analizi, t testi ve çoklu karşılaştırmalar için LSD testi uygulanmıştır. Türkiye’deki hane halkının finansal stres ve rafhını ölçmek amacıyla sorulan sorulardan hepsi hiotezlerde de belirtildiği gibi istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir değişim gösterdiği görülmektedir. Yani; hane halkının dfinansal sıkıntı ve rafahı onun cinsiyet, yaş, çalışılan kurum, meslek, medeni durum, sağlık sigortasında bağlı olunan kurum, eğitim seviyesi, anne ve babanın eğitimi düzeyi ve aylık hane geliri gibi demografik değişkenleriyle anlamlı olarak değişmektedir. Çalışmaya göre; erkek katılımcıların kadınlara kıyasla finansal stres düzeyleri daha düşük-finansal refah düzeyleri daha yüksek; yaş artıkça finansal sıkıntı düzeylerinin daha düşük, refah düzeylerinin ise yüksek; Avukat, akademisyen, işçi, doktor, mühendis, esnaf veya emekli olan katılımcıların öğretmen veya memur olan katılımcılara kıyasla finansal stres düzeyleri daha düşük-finansal refah düzeyleri daha yüksek; Evli olan katılımcıların bekarlara kıyasla finansal stres düzeyleri daha düşük-finansal refah düzeyleri daha yüksek; eğitim düzeyi yükseldikçe finanal sıkıntı düzeyinin azaldığı, final refah düzeyinin ise arttığı; aylık hanehalkı geliri artıkça finansal sıkıntı düzeyinin düşüp, finansal refah düzeyinin arttığı anlaşılmıştır.
