Abstract

Kant’ın devrim ve direnme hakkına dair pek gizlemediği olumsuz görüşleriyle, ilerleyen yaşına rağmen 1789 Fransız Devrimi karşısında kapıldığı tavizsiz coşku arasındaki bariz açı, o günden beri
takipçilerinin ve yorumcularının zihnini kurcalamaya devam etmektedir. Üstelik 20. yüzyıldan günümüze çeşitli aralıklarla yeniden canlanan bu tartışmanın gerisindeki tarihsel-siyasal özgünlükler (totalitarizm gibi), verimli ama daha da çetrefil bir kavramsal zeminin doğmasına neden olmuştur. Fakat bu makalede hedeflenen şey, buradaki uzun tartışmanın tüm uğraklarını tek bir çalışmada tüketmek değil, Kant ile Fransız Devrimi arasındaki etkileşime odaklanmaktır. Yalnızca bu bile, Fransız Devrimi’nin sarsıcı olaylarına tanıklık eden Kant’ın devrimle nasıl hemhâl olduğunu ve daha önemlisi, Alman düşüncesinin hızla kutuplaşarak siyasallaştığı 1790’lı yıllar boyunca, kendisinin felsefede yaptığı şey ile devrimin siyasette yaptığı şey arasındaki atfın ne denli güçlendiğini gösterecektir. Felsefesinin bu siyasal doruğunda, maruz kaldığı çok yönlü tazyiklerin etkisi altında, komplike ve bazı açılardan da gerilimli bir devrim yorumu geliştirmiştir Kant. Genel bir kavram olarak devrime dair yorumlarını dışarıda bıraktığımız ve yalnızca Fransız Devrimi’ne doğrudan veya dolaylı atıfta bulunduğu metinlerine odaklandığımız bu makalede, söz konusu etkileşimin boyutlarını
anlamaya çalışıyoruz

Kant and the French Revolution

Abstract

The obvious contrast between his unfavourable remarks about the revolution and the right of resistance which he did not conceal and his uncompromising enthusiasm for the French Revolution despite his advancing age, has been occupied the minds of his followers and commentators since then. Furthermore, the historicalpolitical peculiarities (such as totalitarianism) behind this debate, which has been revived at various intervals from the 20th century to the present, have led to the emergence of an abundant but more complex conceptual ground. But what is aimed in this article is to focus on the interaction between Kant and the French Revolution rather than to exhaust all the moments of the discussion here in a single study. This alone will show how Kant,
who witnessed the shocking events of the French Revolution, became integrated with the revolution, and more importantly, how the attribution between what he did in philosophy and what the revolution did in politics was getting stronger throughout the 1790s, the time when German thought became rapidly polarized and politicized. At this political climax of his philosophy, and under the influence of multiple pressures he was exposed to, Kant developed a complicated and, in some ways, tense interpretation of revolution. In this article, where we leave out his remarks on the revolution as a general concept and only focus on his texts in which he refer to the French Revolution directly or indirectly, we try to understand the dimensions of the interaction aforementioned.
