Effect of different irrigation levels on yield, yield components and quality parameters of cotton plant

Abstract

Objective: This study was carried out to investigate effect of different irrigation water applications on yield, yield components and quality parameters of the cotton plant, which is widely grown in our country, in 2021. Materials and Methods: The experiment was carried out in a randomized plot design with three replications. In the study, eight irrigation levels (kcp: plant pan coefficient; 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, and 1.75) were used. The amount of irrigation water was applied every 4 days according to the class A pan. Results: As a result of research, the cotton plant seasonal amount of irrigation water, evapotranspiration, irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), water use efficiency (WUE) values were determined as 90-1371 mm 155.2-1347.8 mm, 0.26-4.92 kg m-3, 0.26-2.85 kg m-3, respectively. It was found that there were also increases in the amount of seasonal water consumption due to an increase in the amount of irrigation water, and however decreases in the values of IWUE and WUE. Cotton seed yield, ginning efficiency, plant height, number of numbers of boll per plant and boll weight were determined as 24.20-558.52 kg da-1, 38.06-42.38%, 35.33-97.33 cm, 1.08-12.50 g, plant-1 and 2.43-4.20 g, respectively. Fiber fineness, fiber strength and fiber length were founded as 4.63-5.27 micronaire, 27.05-30.43 g tex-1 and 27.73-30.71 mm, respectively. Depending on the increase in the applied irrigation water, cotton seed yield, plant height, number of bolls per plant, boll weight and fiber length were also increased. However, it was found that due to the increase in irrigation water applied, there were decreases in the values of gin yield, fiber fineness and fiber strength. Conclusion: According to the results of the study, in case of water shortage, a maximum of 25% restriction should be applied to the water requirement of the plant. However, if there is no water shortage, it is recommended to take the plant pan coefficient of 1.25.
