Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Kentsel Yoksulluk Deneyimleri: Bourdieu’nün Sermaye Kavramı Üzerinden Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Kentsel yoksulluk gittikçe artan sayıda insanın yaşadığı günümüz kentlerinde kritik bir sorun haline gelmiştir. Bu sorun temel olarak ekonomik problemlere dayanmakla birlikte kentsel yaşamın farklı boyutlarında karşılaşılan sorunlarla da yakından ilişkilidir. Bu durum kentsel yoksulluğun çeşitli boyutlarını Bourdieu’nün sermaye kavramı ile tartışmaya olanak sunmaktadır. Mevcut çalışma, Bandırma Onyedi Eylül Üniversitesi’nde Siyaset Bilimi ve Kamu Yönetimi bölümünde öğrenim görmekte olan üniversite öğrencilerinin kentsel yoksulluk deneyimlerine odaklanmayı ve bu deneyimlerin ekonomik ve kültürel sermaye ile ilişkisini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Buradan hareketle, bir durum çalışması örneği olan ve sınıf içi gözlemlerden yola çıkılarak başlanan araştırma esas olarak 26 bölüm öğrencisi ile yapılan yarı yapılandırılmış derinlemesine mülakatlara dayanmaktadır. Öğrencilerin deneyimlerinden elde edilen veriler çeşitli temalar altında toplanarak betimsel analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda üniversite öğrencilerinin ekonomik sermaye bakımından yaşamış oldukları sorunların eğitim süreçlerini sekteye uğratabildiği, alım gücünün düşmesi sonucunda aileden gelen ekonomik sermaye ile burs ve kredi ödemelerinin sağladığı imkânın yetersiz kaldığı ve istihdamın kendi içinde çeşitli sorunlar barındırdığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Kültürel sermaye kapsamında elde edilen verilerde öğrencilerin ailelerinin eğitim seviyesinin düşük olduğu ve bu nedenle kültürel sermayelerini artırmaları için öğrencilere birer eyleyen olarak büyük iş düştüğü ancak yetersiz ekonomik sermayenin kültürel sermayenin cisimleşmiş, nesnelleşmiş ve kurumsallaşmış tiplerine ulaşmayı da güçleştirdiği görülmüştür. Öğrencilerin kentsel yoksulluk deneyimlerinin çok boyutlu olması gerçeğinden hareketle öğrencilerin ekonomik sermaye yetersizliğinin ve yalnızca ekonomik sermayeye yönelik yetersiz politikaların yükseköğretim öğrencisinin toplumsal hiyerarşide üst basamaklara çıkabilmesi için gerekli altyapıyı sağlayamadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

University Students’ Experiences of Urban Poverty: An Analysis Based on Bourdieu’s Concept of Capital

Abstract

Urban poverty has become a critical issue in contemporary cities, where an increasing number of people reside. While this problem is fundamentally rooted in economic challenges, it is also closely linked to difficulties encountered in various aspects of urban life. This multifaceted nature of urban poverty provides an opportunity to explore the issue through Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of capital. The present study aims to examine the experiences of university students studying in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University with regard to urban poverty, and to analyze the relationship between these experiences and their levels of economic and cultural capital. Based on classroom observations and designed as a case study, the research primarily draws on semi-structured, in-depth interviews conducted with 26 students from the department. The data derived from students’ narratives were categorized under various themes and subjected to descriptive analysis. The findings reveal that the challenges students face due to a lack of economic capital can disrupt their educational trajectories. The declining purchasing power renders both familial financial support and state-provided scholarships and loans insufficient, while the employment opportunities available to students are fraught with their own set of difficulties. In terms of cultural capital, the data show that the students generally come from families with low educational attainment. As a result, students must take a more active role in enhancing their cultural capital as agents. However, limited economic capital poses significant barriers to accessing the embodied, objectified, and institutionalized forms of cultural capital. In conclusion, the multidimensional nature of university students’ experiences with urban poverty underscores the inadequacy of both their economic capital and policies that address only economic deficiencies. These limitations hinder students’ ability to build the necessary foundation to ascend the social hierarchy through higher education.
