The Effect of P4C (Philosophy for Children) Activities in Social Studies Course on Decision Making Skills of Primary School Students

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of P4C (Philosophy for Children) activities on students' decision-making skills within the scope of primary school 4th grade social studies course. In this direction, the study group of the research, which used a quasi-experimental model, consisted of a total of 45 primary school 4th grade students studying in a primary school. In the study, the students were divided into two groups as experimental and control groups. The groups were selected by random assignment from among the 4th grade classes in the same school. The experimental process, which lasted for nine weeks, was designed to explore the applicability of the P4C method in the context of the social studies course. This process enhanced students' cognitive and social skills by fostering their active participation in the lessons. This process was designed with the aim of developing students as individuals who not only acquire knowledge but also question, discuss and make sense of knowledge. In addition, a significant improvement in students' decision-making skills was observed. It can be said that P4C activities will not only provide students with academic knowledge, but will also be effective in gaining high-level skills. In conclusion, within the framework of the limitations of this study, it was revealed that P4C made significant contributions to both educational and individual development and brought an innovative approach to the social studies course. The findings suggest that the P4C method can be applied more widely in education and can be an effective teaching strategy in developing students' decision-making skills.

Sosyal Bilgiler Dersinde P4C (Çocuklar için Felsefe) Etkinliklerinin İlkokul Öğrencilerinin Karar Verme Becerisi Üzerindeki Etkisi

Abstract

Bu araştırma, ilkokul 4. sınıf sosyal bilgiler dersi kapsamında uygulanan P4C (Çocuklar İçin Felsefe) etkinliklerinin öğrencilerin karar verme becerileri üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir. Bu doğrultuda yarı deneysel model kullanılan araştırmanın çalışma grubunu, bir ilkokulda öğrenim gören toplam 45 ilkokul 4. sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Çalışmada, öğrenciler deney ve kontrol grubu olmak üzere iki gruba ayrılmıştır. Gruplar, aynı okulda öğrenim gören 4. sınıf şubeleri arasından rastgele atama yöntemiyle seçilmiştir. Deneysel süreç, 9 hafta süresince gerçekleştirilmiş olup, sosyal bilgiler dersi bağlamında P4C yönteminin uygulanabilirliğini araştırmaya yönelik olarak tasarlanmıştır. Araştırma süreci, öğrencilerin ders içindeki aktif katılımını artırarak, onların bilişsel ve sosyal becerilerinin gelişimine katkı sağlamıştır. Öğrencilerin yalnızca bilgi edinmekle kalmayıp, bilgiyi sorgulayan, tartışan ve anlamlandıran bireyler olarak gelişmeleri hedeflenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, özellikle deney grubundaki öğrencilerin karar verme becerilerinde belirgin bir gelişim gözlemlenmiştir. P4C etkinliklerinin, öğrencilere sadece akademik bilgi kazandırmakla kalmayıp, karar verme gibi üst düzey becerilerin kazandırılmasında da etkili olduğu söylenebilir. Araştırmanın sınırlılıkları çerçevesinde elde edilen bulgular, P4C'nin hem eğitsel hem de bireysel gelişim açısından önemli katkılar sunduğunu ve sosyal bilgiler dersine yenilikçi bir yaklaşım kazandırdığını göstermektedir. Elde edilen sonuçlar, P4C yönteminin eğitimde daha yaygın bir şekilde uygulanabileceğini ve öğrencilerin karar verme becerilerini geliştirmede etkili bir öğretim stratejisi olabileceğini ortaya koymaktadır.
