Abstract

Abstract

Coping encompasses the strategies individuals use to manage and respond to stressors. Prisons represent environments with high levels of stress, while the process leading to incarceration and the period following release are heavily influenced by numerous stress factors. This underscores the importance of studying inmates’ coping styles and their relationship to mental health and related variables. This review delves into the concept of coping, examining its role in dealing with challenging experiences and emphasizing the relationship between coping and imprisonment—a particularly stressful experience. It also compiles findings from national and international studies that explore how coping strategies during imprisonment are linked to mental health, sociodemographic characteristics, and crime-related factors. The review highlights that inmates who can flexibly adapt their coping styles to different circumstances tend to fare better. It further underscores the value of resources such as social support in mitigating the use of ineffective coping strategies and promoting better mental health outcomes.
