The Examination of the Relationship Between Internet Addiction and Perceived Stress in Terms of Perceived Social Support

Öz

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between internet addiction and perceived stress in terms of perceived social support. 

Method: The sample was composed of 346 university students studying at Necmettin Erbakan University. Data was gathered by using personal information form, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Perceived Stress Scale and Internet Addiction Scale. 

Results: Predictive relationships among variables were examined with the structural equation modelling. The results showed that internet addiction positively predicts perceived stress. Furthermore, it is determined that there is a significantly and negatively relationship between internet addiction and perceived social support. It is found that there is also a negative relationship between perceived social support and perceived stress. Besides, it is found out that perceived social support mediates in the relationship between internet addiction and perceived stress levels.

Conclusion: Internet addiction predicts participants’ perceived stress levels and perceived social support has a mediating role in the relationship between internet addiction and perceived stress. This result shows the importance of perceived social support.

İnternet Bağımlılığı ve Algılanan Stres İlişkisinin Algılanan Sosyal Destek Açısından İncelenmesi

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı genç bireylerin internet bağımlılığı ve algılanan stres düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin algılanan sosyal destek açısından incelenmesidir. 

Yöntem: Araştırmanın örneklemini Necmettin Erbakan Üniversitesi’nde öğrenim görmekte olan toplamda 346 üniversite öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Verilerin toplanması amacıyla oluşturulan kişisel bilgi formu, Çok Boyutlu Algılanan Sosyal Destek Ölçeği, Algılanan Stres Ölçeği ve İnternet Bağımlılığı Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. 

Bulgular: Değişkenler arasındaki yordayıcı ilişkilerin belirlenmesi amacıyla bir model oluşturulmuştur ve bu model yapısal eşitlik modellemesi yardımıyla test edilmiştir. Sonuçlar internet bağımlılığının algılanan stresi pozitif yönde yordadığını göstermektedir. İnternet bağımlılığı ile algılanan sosyal destek arasında negatif yönlü bir ilişki olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Benzer şekilde algılanan stres ile algılanan sosyal destek arasında da negatif bir ilişki bulunduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca algılanan sosyal desteğin internet bağımlılığı ve algılanan stres arasındaki ilişkide aracı değişken olarak rol oynadığını sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Sonuç: Kişilerin internet bağımlılıklarının algıladıkları stresi yordadığı, algıladıkları sosyal desteğin internet bağımlılığı ve algılanan stres arasındaki ilişkide aracı rolü olduğu bulunmuştur. Bu sonuç da algılanan sosyal desteğin önemini ortaya koymaktadır..
