Abstract

Examining Romantic Relationship Beliefs with the Help of a Media Tool: The Example of Aşk-ı Memnu

Year 2026, Volume: 21 Issue: 49, 34 - 54, 24.03.2026

Abstract

The media's decisive and effective role in fostering unrealistic beliefs in romantic relationships is noteworthy. Considering this role, the work Aşk-ı Memnu was examined as an example of media elements in the current study. This work was addressed with its possible impact on relationships in the context of accommodation theory and social learning theory. The study was analyzed by the researchers using content analysis through document review. The theoretical infrastructure used for coding in the analysis was the classification of "passionate love" and "companionate love" by Hatfield and Walster, and the romantic relationship beliefs presented by Sprecher and Metts. The type of "passionate love" and the beliefs of "lonely and single", "idealization", and "love overcomes all difficulties" were encountered intensively in the work. The findings of the study were discussed in light of the role of the media in fostering unrealistic beliefs about romantic relationships.
