Examining Nursing Students' Metaphor Perceptions Towards the Concepts of 'Surgery' and 'Surgical Nurse'

Abstract

The aim of this study is to reveal the perceptions of nursing students regarding the concepts of surgery and surgical nurse through metaphors. In this study, the phenomenology research design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The universe of the study consisted of 132 second-year nursing students studying at a university in the Central Black Sea Region in the spring semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. No sample selection was made and the entire universe was included in the study. The research data were obtained with the data collection form created to reveal their introductory information and perceptions of the concepts of surgery and surgical nurse. The content analysis method was used in the analysis of the research data. The students included in the study were between the ages of 18-23 and 69.0% were female. While 60% of the students stated that their current opinion about the concept of surgery was positive, 57% stated that their current opinion about the concept of surgical nursing was positive. The nursing students (n:100) included in the study created 15 different metaphors for the concept of surgery and 18 different metaphors for the concept of surgical nursing. More than half of the nursing students in the study had positive thoughts about surgery and surgical nursing. It is thought that this was due to their observations during practice. Half of the students considered the concept of surgery as a whole in which the nurse was an inseparable part.

Hemşirelik Öğrencilerinin ‘Cerrahi’ ve ‘Cerrahi Hemşiresi’ Kavramlarına Yönelik Metafor Algılarının İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı hemşirelik öğrencilerinin cerrahi ve cerrahi hemşiresi kavramına ilişkin sahip oldukları algıları, metaforlar aracılığıyla ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden fenomonoloji (olgu bilim) araştırma deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini 2023-2024 eğitim öğretim yılı bahar döneminde, Orta Karadeniz Bölgesi’nde yer alan bir üniversitede öğrenim gören 132 ikinci sınıf hemşirelik bölümü öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Örneklem seçimine gidilmeyip evrenin tamamı araştırmaya dahil edilmiştir. Araştırma verileri tanıtıcı bilgilerini ve cerrahi ile cerrahi hemşiresi kavramlarına yönelik algılarını ortaya koymak amacıyla oluşturulan veri toplama formu ile elde edilmiştir. Araştırma verilerinin analizinde içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmaya dahil olan öğrencilerin yaşı 18- 23 yaş aralığındadır ve %69.0’u kadındır. Öğrencilerin %60’ı cerrahi kavramı hakkında şu anki düşüncesinin olumlu olduğunu söylerken, %57’si cerrahi hemşireliği kavramına yönelik şu anki düşüncesinin olumlu olduğunu ifade etmiştir. Araştırmaya dahil olan hemşirelik öğrencileri (n:100) tarafından cerrahi kavramına yönelik 15, cerrahi hemşireliği kavramına yönelik ise 18 adet farklı metafor oluşturulmuştur. Araştırmada hemşirelik öğrencilerinin yarıdan fazlası cerrahi ve cerrahi hemşireliği hakkında olumlu düşüncelere sahiptir. Bunun nedeninin uygulama sırasındaki gözlemleri olduğu düşünülmektedir. Öğrencilerin yarısı ise cerrahi kavramını içinde hemşirenin de ayrılmaz bir parça olduğu bir bütün olarak ele almışlardır.
