Evaluation of the response of some rice varieties to rice blast disease under growth room and field conditions

Abstract

Rice blast disease, caused by Pyricularia oryzae, is a significant fungal disease of rice worldwide. The disease significantly affects rice yield and quality, particularly in humid regions of Mediterranean countries. Effective control of rice blast is possible with the use of licensed fungicides. However, chemical control is often not very economical and may not be ecologically preferable. On the other hand, one of the most important approaches is the use of resistant varieties. This study aimed to evaluate the resistance of rice varieties to rice blast disease. A mixture of 10 rice blast isolates developed from single spores was used as inoculum. The study was conducted under grow room and field conditions. 49 rice varieties were observed, including two susceptible varieties. Rice blast reactions were evaluated according to a 0-5 scale at different growth stages of rice. In the study, Balaban and Aromatik-1 varieties were found to be immune both in the field and in the growth room; It was found that the Hamzadere variety is moderately resistant; the Kızıltan, Osmancık-97, Gönen, Altınyazı, Yavuz, Kıral, Koral, Manyas Yıldızı and Mevlütbey varieties are moderately susceptible; and the Akçeltik, Karacadağ and Sarıçeltik varieties are susceptible to rice blast disease.
