Investigations on determination of soilborne fungal pathogens causing root rot, crown rot and wilt on lentil in Southeast Anatolia Region.
Abstract
Lentil is one of the major products grown in a very large area in South East Anatolia, where dry agriculture is common. Diseases are one of the main causes preventing production. This study aimed to determine soil pathogens, which are commonly found in lentil grown fields during 2000-2002. Ninety nine fungus isolates were obtained from 60 diseased fields in lentil growing areas of Diyarbakır and Mardin provinces and it was found that these isolates were members of 10 different species. 81.1% of the isolates were found to be Fusarium ssp. [Fusarim oxysporum (44.44%), Fusarium solani (11.11%), Fusarium reticulatum (%8.08), Fusarium equiseti (%6.06), Fusarium subglutinans (%4.04), Fusarium graminearum (%3.03), Fusarium chlamydosporum (2.02%), Fusarium spp. (%3.03)]. The other pathogens were identified as Phoma medicaginis var. pinodella (%13.13), Alternaria alternata (% 3.03) and Ulocladium atrum (%2.02). Pathogenicity studies showed that 5 isolates of F. oxysporum caused diseases in the lentil plants ranging from 33.3-70.0 %. The pathogenicity of other isolates were as follows: 2 isolates of F. solani 30.2-80.0 %, 2 isolates of Phoma medicaginis var. pinodella 97.5-100.0 %, 2 isolates of F. reticulatum 33.3- 66.6 %, 1 isolate of F. equiseti 30.0 %, 1 isolate of Alternaria alternata 15.0 %. Pathogen fungus species caused following symptoms on plants; reduction on growth, drying and falling of leaves, root and crown rot browning, thinning of roots and decrease in numbers of nodule bacteria in roots.
