Abstract

Two commercially available neem insecticides, Neem Azal T/S and Neemix, were tested as antifeedant against larval and adult stages of Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say.

Azadirachta indica A. Juss preparations were used to be alternatively to chemical insecticides to control L. decemlineata. Leaf dipping method was used under laboratory conditions. This purpose, third instar 5-10 days old and about 30-35 mg weight chosen. Adult 5-10 days old were also used.

For the bioassays leaf discs were obtained from potato plants grown in a glasshouse free of any pesticides. The leaf disc used in bioassay experiments was 2.2 cm in diameter. Six different rates were used for Neem Azal T/S, 15, 25, and 50 ppm, and for Neemix, 15, 30, and 60 ppm for these bioassay experiments. The experiments were replicated ten times including the control.

The results indicated that both formulations showed strong antifeedant effect. This effect was with dose and time related. The higher the dose the less leaf area was consumed by the test insects. On the other hand the untreated (control) insects consumed all the leaf discs.
