Investigation of the usability of activated carbon produced from sugar beet pulp for the adsorption of 2,4-D and Metribuzin pesticides in wastewaters

Abstract

In this study the adsorption of 2,4-D and Metribuzin herbicides, present in wastewaters and used in Turkey intensively, on activated carbon produced from dried sugar beet pulp by heat activation and on commercial powdered activated carbon was comparatively investigated in a batch system. At studies, effect of initial herbicide concentration, temperature and pH parameters on adsorption rate and yield was investigated and optimum working conditions determined. Defining parameters of the system, adsorption equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters was obtained by modelling and results were compared with commercial activated carbon. It was observed that especially at low initial herbicide concentration the adsorption yield of activated carbon that produced from beet pulp approached to the yield of commercial activated carbon.

Şeker pancarı küspesinden elde edilen aktif karbonun atık sulardaki 2,4-D ve Metribuzin pestisitlerinin adsorpsiyonunda kullanılabilirliğinin araştırılması

Abstract

Bu çalışmada atık sularda yer alan ve Türkiye'de yoğun olarak kullanılan herbisitlerden 2,4-D ve Metribuzin'in kurutulmuş şeker pancarı küspesinden ısıl aktivasyonla elde edilen aktif karbona ve ticari aktif karbona adsorpsiyonu kesikli sistemde karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiştir. Çalışmada adsorpsiyon hız ve verimliliğine; çözeltideki herbisit derişimi, sıcaklık ve ortam pH'ı gibi parametrelerin etkileri araştırılmış ve optimum çalışma koşulları saptanmıştır. Bu sistemi tanımlayan parametreler, adsorpsiyon dengesi, kinetiği ve termodinamik parametreleri modellenerek bulunmuş ve sonuçlar ticari aktif karbon ile bulunan sonuçlarla karşılaştırılmıştır. Şeker pancarı küspesinden elde edilen aktif karbonun özellikle düşük başlangıç derişimlerinde ticari aktif karbona yakın kapasite ve verimde adsorpsiyon yaptığı gözlenmiştir.
