Importance of Routine Biopsy in Percutaneous Vertebroplasty Surgery Applied for the Treatment of Vertebral Compression Fractures

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study was to emphasize the importance of conducting a biopsy during percutaneous vertebroplasty surgery for vertebral compression fractures. Material and Method: 73 patients with vertebral compression fractures who did not have primary malignancy or metabolic disease were included in the study. All patients had percutaneous vertebroplasty and biopsies were obtained during the procedure. Fracture levels were recorded. The patients’ preoperative and postoperative pain levels were evaluated with VAS scores. Results: Of the 73 patients we treated, 13 were male and 60 were female. The patients’ average age was 75.60 (range 51-91). Biopsies were obtained from 116 fractured vertebral levels of a total of 73 patients. The biopsy of 1 patient (0.86%) was observed to be compatible with multiple myeloma. The mean VAS score of the patients was 9.22 preoperatively and 1.34 in the postoperative 6th week. No statistically significant relationship between fracture level or patient age and pain was found (p>0.05). Conclusions: In the study, it was seen that even if osteoporosis is very common in the etiology of patients operated on due to VCF, it is important to take biopsies from all levels. Although rare, unexpected malignancies can be considered a cause of VCFs.
