Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Centers (AMATEM) and Social Work Practices in These Centers

Abstract

Substance addiction is a global health problem that causes serious problems at individual and social levels. Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment Centers (AMATEMs), which have an important role in combating this problem in Turkey, provide treatment, rehabilitation and counselling services to individuals with addiction problems. This article aims to evaluate the current status and importance of social work practices in AMATEMs. This study is based on a literature review examining social work practices in AMATEMs. The article discusses the history, functioning, services provided and the role of social workers in AMATEMs. AMATEMs have an important place in the fight against substance addiction in Turkey. Social workers working in the centers undertake critical tasks such as assessment of addicted individuals, psychosocial interventions, planning of post- discharge processes and reintegration with the society. Social work plays an important role in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of substance addiction. Social work practices provided in AMATEMs have an important place in the fight against substance addiction. Increasing the effectiveness of these services will contribute to achieving more successful results in the fight against addiction. In this context, it is recommended to increase the number and quality of social workers in AMATEMs, organize in-service trainings and strengthen community-based support mechanisms.
