What is an Open Access Publication?

Nowadays, readers pay to access articles either through a subscription or by paying a fee each time they download an article. With the escalation of journal subscription charges, universities, research institutes, and libraries may be forced to subscribe to fewer journals, which in turn may limit the range of articles available to readers. The open-access model of publication allows all interested readers to view, download, print, and redistribute any article without a subscription, which may enable far greater distribution of an author's work. Through the open-access model, the scientific community and the general public can access all content published in the journals immediately and for free as soon as it is published on the Internet.

What are article processing charges?

The Black Sea Journal of Engineering and Science (e-ISSN: 2619-8991) is published within the Open Access model. However, Open access publishing is not without costs. As we do not sell online subscriptions, all articles are subject to an article processing charge (APC). Therefore, according to the countries in the map below, author/s pay a one-time APC to cover the costs of peer review administration and management, professional production of articles in PDF and other formats, and dissemination of published papers in various venues, in addition to other publishing functions. 

Authors of articles submitted after January 01, 2026, will be charged the updated "Article Processing Charge" below.

Additionally, all editors, authors, and readers registered in the DergiPark system are entitled to access all issues of the Black Sea Journal of Engineering and Science free of charge.

Article-processing charges explained

Editorial Quality Assurance - performs a final check to ensure that the manuscript and its review process adhere to the journal's guidelines and policies,
Journal Development - support our authors, editors, and reviewers, ensure the journal is indexed as widely as possible and published articles receive the attention they deserve,
Technology teams - build and maintain our easy-to-use, state-of-the-art systems.

The main reasons for the article processing charge (APC) are as follows;

5. To provide free access (Open Access) to readers,
