Skill of Using Writing Model Based on Mental Design in Forming Text Process
Abstract
Writing which is one of four main skills of language is a tool for learning. In this respect, learning can be through writing while writing can be through learning. Learning process is necessitated for the development of writing skill. Learning to form written texts and forming original written texts by understanding mental process is possible. Various strategies and models is used in writing. One of them is “Writing Model based on Mental Design”. This model focuses on mental dimension of writing and design of writing process in mind. In the present study, it was paid attention on the effects of teaching writing process by “Writing Model based on Mental Design” on development of writing. In the study designed to examine students’ writings through steps of “Writing Model based on Mental Design”, it was aimed to answer the question of “How did Writing Model based on Mental Design develop students’ writing skills?” Based on this purpose, case study as one of qualitative research methods design was used. The study group was composed of 20 students who were 5th grade students in a middle school. Activity papers collected before, during and after the education based on the model were evaluated. Their development on the steps of “topic of text, type of text, audience of text, word and word groups referring the main idea in the text, determining entry and end of text, identifying the details used in body of text, writing draft, selecting title, editing text and revision and sharing” was analyzed by descriptive and content analysis techniques. In light of the findings of the study, it was identified that students developed their skills on these steps and formed original texts.
