Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

Beykent University Journal of Science and Engineering is based on the principle of producing, developing, and sharing the processes of interdisciplinary studies, primarily in the fields of engineering, basic sciences, and architecture, in an impartial manner. The publication and ethical rules of the studies submitted to our journal are organized in accordance with the open-access guidelines provided by Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

1. Publication Policy and Processes

  • A double-blind peer-review process is operated for all articles in our journal.

  • Our journal adopts an open access policy, and published works are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) License.

  • Each study submitted to our journal goes through a plagiarism check via the iThenticate program. Excluding the bibliography section, the maximum allowed similarity limit is set at 15%. In the event of detecting scientific unethical situations such as plagiarism in the study, violation of double-blind peer review confidentiality, or producing multiple publications from a single research, the publication process of the article is terminated and rejected.

  • No fee is charged during the article submission, evaluation, and publication processes.

2. Ethical Responsibilities of Stakeholders

A. Responsibilities of Editors

  • Editors must evaluate articles completely impartially, regardless of the authors' race, religion, nationality, gender, or institutional affiliation.

  • Authors' intellectual independence must be respected, and articles should be reviewed and processed at a reasonable speed.

  • Editors should have policies to resolve potential editorial conflicts of interest and must keep article information confidential until the evaluation process is completed.

  • Suspicions regarding research misconduct related to published articles should be meticulously pursued by the editors.

B. Responsibilities of Reviewers

  • Reviewers should impartially and fairly evaluate articles suitable for their field of expertise.

  • Any conflict of interest that may occur during the evaluation phase should be taken into consideration; when the existence of such a situation is suspected, the editorial board should be informed immediately and the reviewer should withdraw from the review process.

  • Evaluations must be conducted in confidentiality, and reviewers should not contact authors directly.

  • Review reports must be academic, explanatory, constructive, and adhere to grammar rules.

C. Responsibilities of Authors

  • Articles must not contain plagiarism, must be completely original, and must not have been previously published elsewhere.

  • Authors must not use discriminatory language based on identities such as gender, race, language, belief, class, and sexual orientation.

  • Everyone who has made a significant contribution to the study should be listed as a co-author, and people who have no intellectual contribution should not be added as authors. Proposing changes to the author order or adding/removing authors for a study that has started the peer review process should not be done.

  • All financial support provided to the study and possible conflicts of interest must be clearly declared.

  • Authors are obliged to inform the journal editors when they notice an error in their published articles.

3. Ethics Committee Approval and Research Ethics

Obtaining and documenting ethics committee approval is mandatory for certain types of research:

  • Qualitative or quantitative research requiring data collection from participants, such as surveys, interviews, focus group studies, and observations.

  • Experimental studies and clinical research using humans and animals (including materials/data).

  • Retrospective studies conducted in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Law.

  • Information regarding these permissions (committee name, date, and decision number) must be clearly stated in the methodology section and at the end of the article.

4. Artificial Intelligence Usage Policy

  • Artificial intelligence technologies can only be used as auxiliary tools in areas such as grammar, spell checking, and visualization; however, this usage must be clearly stated in the declarations section of the article.

  • Artificial intelligence can under no circumstances be shown as an author or co-author; content accuracy and ethical compliance are entirely the responsibility of the author.

  • The use of artificial intelligence tools in double-blind peer review and editorial evaluation processes is strictly prohibited; these processes must be carried out entirely by humans.

  • Double-blind peer review and editorial decision processes must rely entirely on human effort and decision, and artificial intelligence tools must not be resorted to in any way during these sensitive stages.

5. Unethical Behaviors and Sanctions

  • When it is detected that the data used in the articles has been manipulated, distorted, or fabricated data has been used, the article is immediately rejected.

  • Using the results of a research in academic appointments and promotions by dividing it in a way that disrupts its integrity or by repeatedly presenting the same research in different places is considered an ethical violation.
