The worn out bits, used in the core-drilling operations carried out in the
Hekimhan Formation, mostly around Karakuz (in 1960), have been returned to their manufacturers.
In this way it has become possible to know the amount of diamond loss and to realise the economic importance of the percentage of core recovery, the size of the diamonds, and the physical
characteristics of bits, in the evaluation of their efficiency. The results have been presented in the
following tables, graphs and discussions.
Best results have been obtained by the relatively cheap, average quality coring bits carrying West African bortz diamonds. More expensive and good quality coring bits with oriented
diamonds did more work; but, because of the small number available, no conclusive results could
be obtained.
