In the light of evidences presented herein, the North Anatolian Fault does not have the characteristic features of a transform fault but is rather a suture belt formed by collision of the Anatolian sub-plate with the Eastern Pontid Island Arc, movement of which today results in a right-lateral strike-slip fault at the surface.
