Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to raise awareness about the functions of bibliotherapy, which refers to a very important aspect of reading and which rooted for centuries. In addition to this purpose, it is aimed to provide information about the historical development of bibliotherapy and the role of libraries and librarians in this process, along with the conceptual analysis of bibliotherapy. Within the scope of the study, first, the definitions of the bibliotherapy concept and its various types and approaches are presented. Then, the role of libraries and librarians is mentioned by discussing which processes/stages bibliotherapy includes and what benefits it creates. In the study, with its historical aspect, the title of "Libraries which served as healing agents during the World War I and II periods" was given a special place because the war periods are the periods when awareness and studies on this issue are most intense. By presenting some worldwide examples of the use of bibliotherapy in libraries, limited number of studies conducted in Turkey, in this context, are also included. The study is completed with the conclusion part in which the findings, along with suggestions for future applications are presented. Literature based descriptive method is used in the study. The findings obtained from the study are that bibliotherapy has not found the place it deserves, despite its deep-rooted historical background and its cruciality, and its position in the field of library science and practices remains ambiguous. It is concluded that bibliotherapy, along with its catharsis effect has great importance for reasons such as creating self-confidence in people and helping them to overcome many problems and trauma, and creating stronger personelity traits enabling individuals to cope with potential challenging situations, and it is also concluded that more studies and practices are needed in this context. .It is estimated that this study, which examines the concept of bibliotherapy from a historical and holistic perspective, within the framework of library science, has a unique structure, especially since this subject has been investigated with in a limited manner in the domestic literature.
