Abstract

This study examines the effect of university students’ attitudes toward sport on subjective vitality and investigates the mediating role of mental well-being in this relationship. The research was structured within the framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior and conducted using a relational survey design. The study population consisted of undergraduate students enrolled at various universities in Türkiye , and the sample comprised 640 students who participated on a voluntary basis. Data were collected using standardized instruments measuring attitudes toward sport, mental well-being, and subjective vitality. Prior to hypothesis testing, data suitability was examined, and the factor structures of the measurement instruments were tested using confirmatory factor analysis. Relationships among the variables were analyzed through correlation analyses, followed by regression and bootstrap-based mediation analyses. Mediation analyses were conducted using Model 4 of the PROCESS Macro developed by Hayes. The results revealed significant and positive relationships between attitudes toward sport and mental well-being, mental well-being and subjective vitality, and attitudes toward sport and subjective vitality. Regression analyses indicated that attitudes toward sport significantly predicted subjective vitality. Moreover, mediation analyses demonstrated that mental well-being played a statistically significant mediating role in this relationship. These findings suggest that positive attitudes toward sport enhance subjective vitality not only directly but also indirectly through mental well-being. Overall, the study highlights the importance of sport- and physical activity–based practices in supporting university students’ well-being.

Spora Yönelim, Mental İyi Oluş ve Öznel Zindelik: Aracılık Modeli Üzerine Bir İnceleme
