Mountain of the Gods of the Eastern Mediterranean “Kılıç Dağ” from the Cuneiform Records to the Hellenistic Sources, from Hazi to Kasios

Abstract

Mountains were considered sacred by ancient societies due to their extending up into the sky, being perceived as a bridge of fertility connecting the sky and the earth and from their magnificence. This sanctity was named as the houses of the gods and goddesses or cult centers and formed the basis for positioning the mountains in a privileged place the ancient belief systems. The presence of sacralized mountains as well as the deified mountains is reflected in the Bronze Age texts in Anatolia, revealed that the mountains were seen as a reason for worship, as well as being a place of worship in ancient belief. The Kılıc/Kel Mountain (Cebel Akra) in the Yayladağ District of Hatay, which is recorded as Kasios/Casius, the sacred mountain of Zeus in ancient texts, was known as the sanctuary of the Weather Gods from the XVth century B.C. Kılıç Dag, which was known as the mountain of gods in the cuneiform records and named as Hazi/Hazzi, was especially considered as the holy mountain of the Hurrian Storm God Tešup. This mountain which is considered the throne of the Canaanite Storm God Baal in the Ugaritic tablets, was considered sacred in both the Neo-Assyrian cuneiform records and Ugaritic liturgical texts. The aim of this study is to show the acceptance of Kılıç Dag as a sacred place in the historical and mythical journeys of the Storm Gods in the historical and mythical journeys and the change in parallel with the dominant political power, within the historical framework; the primary records of the period have been determined as the main source of evidence.

Çivi Yazılı Kayıtlardan Hellen Kaynaklarına Hazi’den Kasios’a Eski Doğu Akdeniz’in Tanrılar Dağı “Kılıç Dağ”

Abstract

Dağlar Eskiçağ toplumlarınca gökyüzüne uzanmaları, gökyüzü ile yeryüzünü birbirine bağlayan bereket köprüsü olarak algılanmaları ve görkemleriyle kutsal kabul edilmiştir. Bu kutsallık tanrı ve tanrıçaların evleri ya da kült merkezleri olarak adlandırılarak Eskiçağ inanç sisteminde dağların ayrıcalıklı bir yere konumlandırılmasında temel teşkil etmiştir. Anadolu’da Geç Tunç Çağı metinlerine yansıtılan kutsallaştırılmış dağların yanı sıra tanrılaştırılmış dağların da varlığı, dağların Eskiçağ inanç motifinde tapınım alanı olmalarına ek tapınım nedeni olarak görüldüklerini de ortaya çıkarmıştır. Antikçağ metinlerinde Zeus’un kutsal dağı Kasios/Casius olarak kaydedilen Hatay’ın Yayladağ İlçesindeki Kılıç/Kel Dağ (Cebel Akra) da neredeyse MÖ XV. yüzyıldan itibaren Hava/Fırtına Tanrılarının kutsal alanı olarak anılmaya başlanmıştır. Çivi yazılı kayıtlarda Hazi/Hazzi adıyla bir dağ tanrısı olarak anılan Kılıç Dağ, özellikle Hurrili Fırtına Tanrı Tešup’un kutsal dağı ve evi olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Ugarit tabletlerinde Kenanlı Fırtına Tanrısı Baal’in tahtı kabul edilen bu dağ, Baal Ṣapunu olarak adlandırılarak hem Yeni Asur çivi yazılı kayıtlarında, hem de Ugarit liturjik metinlerinde kutsiyetiyle yer almıştır. Kılıç Dağ’ın neredeyse Geç Tunç Çağı’ndan Roma Dönemi’ne uzanan süreçte Fırtına Tanrılarının tarihi ve mitik yolculuklarında onların kutsal mekânı kabul edilişinin ve hakim siyasi erke koşut değişiminin tarihi çerçevede aktarımının amaçlandığı bu çalışmada, ilgili döneme ait birincil kayıtlar temel kaynak olarak belirlenmiştir.
