Long-Necked Jars from the Late Neolithic Age at Domuztepe

Abstract

This study evaluates the long-necked, globular-bodied jars recovered from the Late Neolithic Age layers of Domuztepe. Domuztepe, one of the important settlements of Upper Mesopotamia throughout the Late Neolithic Age, is one of the largest Halafian settlements in the Near East. In addition to being one of the strongest representatives of the Halaf tradition from an architectural perspective, Domuztepe is also of particular significance because its pottery incorporates both Mesopotamian and Syro-Cilician traditions. In this context, the evaluation of the long-necked, globular-bodied jars, which constitute an important part of the Domuztepe ceramic repertoire, is of considerable significance. This study aims to determine the uses of the long-necked jars found in large quantities at the Domuztepe settlement and to evaluate their cultural connections. For this purpose, the jars were evaluated according to their technological and typological characteristics. It was determined that the vessels belong to different fabric groups and, typologically, were divided into two distinct groups: long cylindrical-necked and long conical-necked jars. In terms of production technology, the jars were also compared with material from different contemporary settlements in order to investigate the cultural connections of Domuztepe.
