The Palmette Friezes of North City Gate of Diocaesarea (Uzuncaburç)

Abstract

Diocaesarea (Uzuncaburç), located approximately 25 km north of Silifke in Mersin province, served during the Hellenistic period as the administrative and religious centre of the region known as the Olba Territorium. During this period, the city developed around the Sanctuary of Zeus Olbios and acquired a planned urban layout. In the Roman Imperial period, new architectural elements added around the sanctuary and the tower contributed to the formation of the urban layout discernible today. Situated at the northern end of the main street identified as the cardo maximus and apparently connected to the colonnaded street, the North City Gate comprises three arched passages: a central main passage flanked by two lateral passages. Although the gate has long been the subject of numerous studies, its architectural decoration has not been described and analysed in detail. A total of 32 palmette friezes have been identified in the decorative bands on the sima of the cornices crowning the gate’s central arch. This study numbers and classifies the decorative motifs within these friezes into three main groups, closed palmettes, open palmettes, and dividing motifs, and provides a detailed description and analysis of the types distinguished within each group. Based on stylistic analysis, the study presents evidence supporting a date in the early Severan period for the palmette decoration.
