New Inscriptions from the Akhisar Museum

Year 2020, Volume: 8, 519 - 529, 30.06.2020
https://doi.org/10.13113/CEDRUS.202025

Abstract

In this paper, four new Greek inscriptions are introduced preserved today in the Akhisar Museum, which is under the directorship of the Manisa Museum. The first two of these inscriptions were found in the Yayakırıldık and Göcek neighbourhoods of the Akhisar District of Manisa Province. The third was brought to the Akhisar Museum from the Kalemoğlu neighbourhood of the Gördes District and the last from the Kozluören neighbourhood of the Soma District. Some Greek theophoric and epichoric personal names, as well as one Latin personal name, are used in the texts of these four inscriptions. In the general context of the first inscription, a woman named Phoibē was honored by her son Epitynkhanōn and her husband Epigonos, together with other relatives unnamed with a marble stele. The second inscription concerns the honouring of two women by different people, named Tykhē and Neikētē. So by one; the brothers, Onēsimos and Eperos, honour their sister Tykhē, by the other Neikētē was honoured by her father Artemidoros Telesphoros, his nurse Stratonikē and her husband Glykōn. In the third inscription, a priest named Menandros is honoured by his wife Ammias, his son Menandros and other unnamed family members. Although these inscriptions contain honorific expressions, it is understood that they are inscribed in a funerary stele style, from both their epigraphic content and the descriptions/decorations on their surfaces. The last inscription is a funerary stele to the memory of Menandros, inscribed by his father, named Philippikos.

Akhisar Müzesi’nden Yeni Yazıtlar

Year 2020, Volume: 8, 519 - 529, 30.06.2020
https://doi.org/10.13113/CEDRUS.202025
