Consumed Bodies in the Consumer Society: Cosmetic Department Workers and Aesthetic Labour

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the shaping of the labour process of women working in cosmetic departments, based on aesthetic norms being products of the new management approaches, in the context of body control. In the mentioned analysis the consumer society is going to be handled as a context of organizational policies requiring emotional and aesthetic labour in the service sector. Concordantly, working conditions of salespeople working in cosmetic departments are going to be examined by considering the background formed by the consumption and production relationality. In order to do these analyses, the literature about the consumption and aesthetic labour notions has been reviewed. The main finding obtained is in the direction of that organizational body policies in today’s consumer society commodify workers in the service sector by turning them into consumption objects. Cosmetic departments are the most striking examples of this commodification with the enforcement of worker’s bodies to employ aesthetic labour. In the research it has ensured that this commodification has actualized with transformation and controlling of workers’ bodies and accustoming workers to consumerism.
