Milliyetçi Muhayyilede Çatallaşma Örneği: Han Milliyetçiliğinden Çin Milliyetçiliğe Evrimleşen Söylem

Abstract

An Example of Bifurcation in the Nationalist Imagination: The Evolving Discourse from Han Nationalism to Chinese Nationalism

Abstract

In this article, the thoughts of Pransenjit Duara, who sees nationalism not as a singular discourse but as a process in which different representations of national identity conflict or negotiate with each other and draws attention to the existence of narratives that “bifurcate” due to one or more of the global, national and local factors, are discussed through a historical section of nationalist thought in China. This section covers a time period extending from the last quarter of the 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century, when the nationalist discourse was shaped in line with the strategies of the republicans advocating democratic revolution in China. Duara’s theoretical framework has provided an extremely productive ground for understanding the evolution of the discourse on national identity, which has gone through three different stages.
