The Impact of the Economic Dissatisfaction on the Twin Deficit: Evidence from Turkey

Öz

Macroeconomic development and welfare levels of countries can have some effects on internal and external economic dynamics. This research examines the relationship between the economic dissatisfaction index and twin deficits, based on the assumption that a country's macroeconomic performance can be evaluated by its level of economic dissatisfaction. This study analyzes the relationship between the economic dissatisfaction indices developed by Okun and Barro and the twin deficit variables using data from Turkey for the period 2004-2023. Using wavelet analysis, the study finds that Okun's economic dissatisfaction index has a strong negative correlation with the budget deficit in the short-term and a causal relationship with the current account deficit. In contrast, Barro's economic dissatisfaction index shows long-term relationships with twin deficits. These analyses indicate that the economic dissatisfaction index has significant effects on twin deficits in the Turkish economy, and these effects should be considered by policymakers. The findings emphasize the need for long-term, reliable, and effective policies to ensure economic stability and address macroeconomic imbalances.

İktisadi Hoşnutsuzluğun İkiz Açık Üzerindeki Etkisi: Türkiye'den Kanıtlar

Öz

Ülkelerin makroekonomik gelişmişlik ve refah düzeyleri, iç ve dış iktisadi dinamikler üzerinde birtakım etkiler oluşturabilmektedir. Bu araştırma, bir ülkenin makroekonomik performansının iktisadi hoşnutsuzluk düzeyi ile değerlendirilebileceği varsayımına dayanarak iktisadi hoşnutsuzluk endeksi ile ikiz açıklar arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektedir. Bu çalışma, Okun ve Barro tarafından geliştirilen iktisadi hoşnutsuzluk endeksleri ile ikiz açık değişkenleri arasındaki ilişkiyi Türkiye için 2004-2023 dönemi verilerini kullanarak, dalgacık analizi ile test etmektedir. Uygulanan dalgacık analizinde, Okun'un iktisadi hoşnutsuzluk endeksinin kısa vadede bütçe açığı ile güçlü negatif korelasyona ve cari açık ile nedensellik ilişkisine sahip olduğu bulunmuştur. Buna karşılık, Barro'nun iktisadi hoşnutsuzluk endeksi ise ikiz açıklarla uzun vadeli ilişkilere sahiptir. Elde edilen sonuçlar, iktisadi hoşnutsuzluk endeksinin Türk ekonomisindeki ikiz açıklar üzerinde önemli etkileri olduğunu ve bu etkilerin politika yapıcılar tarafından dikkate alınması gerektiğini göstermektedir. Bulgular, ekonomik istikrarı sağlamak ve makroekonomik dengesizlikleri ele almak için uzun vadeli, güvenilir ve etkili politikalara olan gereksinimi ortaya çıkarmaktadır.
