Investigation of Psychometric and Some Demographic Properties of “Emotion Regulation Scale for Children” in Gifted Students

Abstract

This study aims to conduct validity and reliability analysis of the Emotion Regulation Scale for Children developed by Rydell et al. (2007) for gifted primary school students. It also aimed to investigate the differences among students' emotion regulation skills according to demographic variables such as gender, grade level, and the number of siblings. For this purpose, 501 gifted students (223 girls, 278 boys) attending primary school were reached. The ages of the students ranged between 7-11, and the mean age was 8.96. The study used the emotion Regulation Scale for Children and personal information form. The construct-concept validity of the scale was determined by confirmatory factor analysis, and its reliability was determined by calculating Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient. Findings yielded that the Emotion Regulation Scale for Children is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used with gifted primary school students. Another study result was that the emotion regulation skill levels of gifted students did not show a significant difference according to gender and the number of siblings but showed a low difference according to grade level.

Çocuklar İçin Duygu Düzenleme Ölçeğinin Psikometrik ve Bazı Demografik Özelliklerinin Özel Yetenekli Öğrencilerde İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Rydell ve arkadaşları (2007) tarafından geliştirilen Çocuklar için Duygu Düzenleme Ölçeğinin özel yetenekli ilkokul öğrencileri için geçerlik ve güvenirlik analizlerini yapmaktır. Aynı zamanda öğrencilerin duygu düzenleme becerilerinin cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi ve kardeş sayısı gibi demografik değişkenlere göre ne düzeyde değiştiğini belirlemektir. Bu amaçla ilkokulda öğrenimine devam eden 501 özel yetenekli öğrenciye (223 kız, 278 erkek) ulaşılmıştır. Öğrencilerin yaşları 7 ile 11 arasında değişmekte ve yaş ortalamaları 8,96 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında Çocuklar İçin Duygu Düzenleme Ölçeği (ÇDDÖ) ve Kişisel Bilgi Formu (KBF) kullanılmıştır. Ölçeğin yapı-kavram geçerliği, doğrulayıcı faktör analizi, güvenirliği ise Cronbach Alfa iç tutarlık katsayısı hesaplanarak belirlenmiştir. Analizler sonucunda, Çocuklar İçin Duygu Düzenleme Ölçeğinin özel yetenekli öğrencilerin duygu düzenleme beceri düzeylerini belirlemede kullanılabilecek geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olduğu görülmüştür. Analizler sonuncunda ayrıca, özel yetenekli öğrencilerin duygu düzenleme beceri düzeylerinin cinsiyete ve kardeş sayısına göre anlamlı fark göstermediği, sınıf düzeyine göre ise düşük düzeyde bir fark gösterdiği bulunmuştur.
