The Effect of the “BİLSEM Future Awareness Psychoeducation Programme” on the Career Exploration Behaviours and Decision-Making Skills of Gifted 4th-Grade Primary School Students

Abstract

In this study, the effect of Future Awareness Psychoeducation Program on the career exploration behaviours and decision-making skills of gifted students attending the 4th-grade of primary school was examined. The study group of the research consisted of a total of 24 students in the 4th-grade of primary school attending the support education programs at the Science and Art Centre (BİLSEM). This study is quasi-experimental research with pre-test, post-test and follow-up test models, including experimental and control groups. Career Exploration Scale, Decision Making Skills Scale for Primary School Students and Socio-Demographic Information Form were used to collect the data. After the pre-test measurements, the Future Awareness Psychoeducation Program was applied to the students in the experimental group by the researcher for four weeks and one session per week, each session consisting of 40+40 minutes, totalling 80 minutes between February and March 2023. During this period, no group sessions or activities were conducted with the control group, and only the pre-test and post-test were administered to the students. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and Mann Whitney U Test were used to analyse the data. The results of the study showed that there was a meaningful difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group students in favour of the post-test scores. It was also found that there was a meaningful difference between the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups in favour of the experimental group. At the same time, a follow-up test was applied to the students in the experimental group two months later and it was determined that the difference between the post-test and follow-up test mean scores was not meaningful. Accordingly, it can be stated that the Future Awareness Psychoeducation Program had a significant impact on students' career exploration behaviours and decision-making skills scores and this effect continued in the follow-up measurements. The findings reveal that the Future Awareness Psychoeducation Program is effective in supporting students' career development.

“BİLSEM Gelecek Farkındalığı Psikoeğitim Programı”nın İlkokul 4. Sınıfa Devam Eden Özel Yetenekli Öğrencilerin Kariyer Keşfi Davranışları ve Karar Verme Becerileri Üzerine Etkisi

Abstract

Bu araştırmada, Gelecek Farkındalığı Psikoeğitim Programı’nın ilkokul 4. sınıfa devam eden özel yetenekli öğrencilerin kariyer keşfi davranışları ve karar verme becerileri üzerine etkisi incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, Bilim ve Sanat Merkezinde (BİLSEM) destek eğitim programlarına devam eden ilkokul 4. sınıf toplam 24 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Bu çalışma, deney ve kontrol gruplu ön test, son test ve izleme testi modeline dayalı yarı deneysel bir araştırmadır. Verilerin toplanmasında Kariyer Keşfi Ölçeği, İlkokul Öğrencileri için Karar Verme Becerisi Ölçeği ve Sosyo-Demografik Bilgi Formu kullanılmıştır. Ön test ölçümlerinin ardından deney grubundaki öğrencilere Şubat-Mart 2023 tarihleri arasında Gelecek Farkındalığı Psikoeğitim Programı, dört hafta ve haftada bir gün olmak üzere 40+40 toplam 80 dakika olarak araştırmacı tarafından uygulanmıştır. Bu süre içerisinde, kontrol grubuyla herhangi bir grup oturumu ve etkinlik yapılmayıp, öğrencilere sadece ön test ve son test uygulanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde Wilcoxon İşaretli Sıralar Testi ve Mann Whitney U Testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda deney grubu öğrencilerinin ön test ve son test puanları arasında son test lehine anlamlı bir farkın olduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca, deney ve kontrol grubunun son test puanları arasında deney grubunun lehine anlamlı bir farklılığın oluştuğu bulunmuştur. Aynı zamanda deney grubundaki öğrencilere iki ay sonra izleme testi uygulanmış ve son test ile izleme testi puan ortalamaları arasındaki farklılığın anlamlı olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Buna göre Gelecek Farkındalığı Psikoeğitim Programı’nın öğrencilerin kariyer keşfi davranışları ve karar verme becerisi puanları üzerinde anlamlı bir etki yarattığı ve bu etkinin izleme ölçümlerinde de devam ettiği belirtilebilir. Elde edilen bulgular Gelecek Farkındalığı Psikoeğitim Programı’nın öğrencilerin kariyer gelişimlerini desteklemede etkili olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır
