Pre-literacy Life Science Teaching: Teacher Experiences and Attitudes Toward Teaching the Courses

Abstract

Life science is a subject that enables primary school students to acquire knowledge, skills, values and attitudes. The aim of the study is to examine the instructional processes of primary school teachers in the first semester of the first grade for the life science course; to identify the methods, techniques and materials they use in this process, their assessment methods, their suggestions on the teaching of the course and their attitudes towards teaching. For this purpose, a mixed-methods design was used, using a triangulation pattern in which qualitative and quantitative data were collected separately, and the analysis results were combined. In the qualitative dimension of the study, a phenomenological design was adopted, 26 primary school teachers were reached. In the quantitative dimension of the study, based on the survey design, 531 primary school teachers were included. While content analysis was used for qualitative data, t-test and variance analysis were used for quantitative data. As a result of the research, it was found that the attitude of the primary school teachers towards the teaching of life science courses was highly positive. It was determined that the primary school teachers considered the life science course important, but the literacy activities carried out in the first semester of first grade negatively affected the teaching process of this course.
