Memluk Sultanı Eşref Halil ve Siyasi Faaliyetleri
Abstract
Kalavun and his dynasty have an important place in Mamluks. Ashraf
Khalil who became Mamluk Sultan after Kalavun is remarkable for his
struggles with the Crusaders in the four-year reign. Born in 666 Eşref
Halil sat on the Mamluk throne. Sultan Kalavun actually declared
Salih Ali to be crown prince, but because of having died he declared
Ashraf Khalil to be crown prince. It is understood that thinking that
Ashraf Khalil's moral weaknesses and his problems related to
agreement with Amirs, Kalavun didn’t want to see him to be heir. In
the period of Ashraf Khalil Acre, Sidon, Sur, Haifa, Kal'atü'r-Rum and other places came under the domination of Islam, Syria had been
removed from the Crusaders. Especially liberation of Acca from
Crusader occupation led the great pleasure in the world of Islam and
Ashraf Khalil had taken place as the conqueror of Acre in Islamic
history. After these lands were earned from Crusaders, complete
dominance was exactly gained over the Armenians who became a
source of unrest in the region. Ashraf Khalil's next target was
liberating Iraq region from Mongol invasion. He stated that he would
regain Iraq region to the Muslims soon, responding with a severe
language to Mongols’ letter in which it was said that Aleppo should be
given back to them and started the necessary preparations. But
Ashraf Khalil couldn’t find opportunity for that, because of having
been killed in a terrible way in 693 as a victim of friction with Amirs.
We can say/it can be said that Ashraf Khalil carried out the
reconstruction activities and made effort to develop trade and
economy in addition to his political activities.
