Joining of Al 2024 Based B4C/SiC Particle-Reinforced Hybrid Composites with TIG Welding

In the present study, weldability of Al 2024 based B4C/SiC particle-reinforced hybrid composite materials produced by powder metallurgy and hot extrusion route is investigated. B4C and SiC are added to the pre-alloyed Al 2024 (Al-Cu-Mg). Matrix material and reinforcing components are mixed in a three-dimensional mixer for 45 min. Powders are compacted with uniaxial compression and the samples of powder metal block are produced. Produced block samples are sintered at 600oC and then extruded at 500oC. Ultimate extruded products are joined by the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding. Macro and micro examination depending on the type of reinforcing component after welding operation are studied.
