THE METHOD OF LISTENING TO THE VOICE OF THE PAST: ORAL HISTORY

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the theoretical and historical background, and methodological aspects of oral history, examining the integration of these dimensions within the field. In this study, a literature review was conducted using primary and secondary sources on what oral history is, how interviews are conducted in this context, and its differences from other interview methods carried out in qualitative studies. The qualitative research technique was used in this direction. The article's scope is delimited by emphasizing the development of oral history as a method and distinguishing its methodological particularities. A significant finding of this research highlights the potential of oral history to uncover hidden anecdotes, stories, and narratives on various levels, making it different from other historical methods. Along with this feature, it has been recognized that oral history is a method that combines theory and practice and emphasized its ability to serve as a source not only in the field of history but also in other disciplines within the social sciences. It has been concluded that as long as all stages are carried out meticulously, historical knowledge can be reliably constructed not only through archives or documents but also from those who directly experienced historical events in question. The unique contribution of this study to the field is the evaluation of the methodological dimension of oral history within the context of debates concerning the reliability and validity of historical information during its developmental phases.

GEÇMİŞİN SESİNİ DİNLEMENİN YÖNTEMİ: SÖZLÜ TARİH

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı; sözlü tarihin teorik ve tarihsel arka planı ile yöntemsel boyutunu incelemek, bu ikisinin söz konusu alan içindeki beraberliğini eleştirel boyutlarıyla gösterebilmektir. Bu çalışmada; birincil ve ikincil kaynaklardan yararlanmak suretiyle sözlü tarihin ne olduğuna, bu kapsamda yapılan mülakatların nasıl yapıldığına ve nitel çalışmalarda yürütülen diğer mülakat yöntemlerinden farklarına dair literatür taraması yapılmış, bu doğrultuda nitel araştırma tekniği kullanılmıştır. Makale, sözlü tarihin gelişimi ve yöntemine dair farklılıkları üzerinden sınırlandırılmıştır. Sözlü tarihin birçok farklı düzlemde gizli kalmış anekdot, hikâye ve anlatıları ortaya çıkarma potansiyeli; onu diğer tarih yöntemlerinden ayıran en dikkate değer özelliğidir. Bu özelliği ile birlikte sözlü tarihin teori ve pratiği birleştiren bir yöntem olduğu tespit edilmiş; sadece tarih alanında değil, sosyal bilimlerin diğer disiplinlerine de kaynaklık edebilme imkânı vurgulanmıştır. Bütün aşamalar titizlikle yürütüldüğü müddetçe tarihin salt arşiv veya belgelerden değil, bahse konu olan tarihsel hadiseyi doğrudan yaşayanlardan da öğrenilebileceği sonucuna varılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın alana özgün katkısı, sözlü tarihin yöntemsel boyutunun tarihsel bilginin özellikle güvenirliği ve geçerliliğinin söz konusu edildiği gelişim evresi içerisinden değerlendirilmesidir.
