Investigation of the Relationship Between Primary School Students' Metacognitive Awareness and Parental Attitudes

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between primary school students' metacognitive awareness and parental attitudes, and to examine whether these variables differ according to various demographic characteristics. The study involved 175 students in the 3rd and 4th grades of two primary schools located in a district center in Yozgat province, along with their parents. Conducted using a relational survey model, the study employed a General Information Form, the Metacognitive Awareness Scale for Children (MAI-C) and the Parental Attitude Scale (PAS) for data collection. The data obtained were analyzed using parametric and non-parametric statistical methods appropriate for the characteristics and distribution of the research variables. The findings revealed a statistically significant, positive, and moderate relationship between the children's metacognitive awareness levels and desirable parental attitudes (r = .588, p < .001). A negative, low-level relationship was found between metacognitive awareness and undesirable parental attitudes; however, this relationship was determined not to be statistically significant (r = -.134, p = .077). Furthermore, it was determined that the children's metacognitive awareness levels did not differ significantly based on variables such as grade level, gender, birth order, number of siblings, and preschool education status, nor based on parental age, education level, or the mother's employment status. The results indicate that desirable parenting attitudes may be associated with children's metacognitive awareness, whereas the demographic variables examined did not lead to significant differences in levels of metacognitive awareness.
