Prospective Teachers’ Perceptions of Quality in Pre-Service Teacher Education

Abstract

This study aims to examine prospective teachers' perceptions of the quality of their pre-service teacher training. The study utilized phenomenology, a qualitative research design. The study group consisted of 34 prospective teachers enrolled in the Faculty of Education at a state university in Türkiye during the 2024-2025 academic year, who had completed or were currently completing their teaching practice. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview form and analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that prospective teachers' perceptions of the quality of pre-service training are shaped particularly by opportunities for practical experience, the balance between theoretical and practical courses, the attitudes and competencies of educators, and the structural characteristics of the faculty. Participants emphasized that the initiation of early internships, the increase in practical courses, and inclusive program designs played a significant role in improving the perceived quality of teacher training. The results highlight the need for more inclusive, practice-oriented teacher training programs grounded in early and long-term practical experience and greater integration of theory and practice.
