The Principals‟ Leadership Styles and Teachers‟ Performance

Abstract

This study aimed to determine their opinions regarding the effect of secondary school principals’ leadership styles on teachers’ performance. Target population of the study constituted 1524 teachers working in public and private secondary schools in 2014-2015 school year within the boundaries of Etimesgut district. Research sample consisted of 306 teachers who were selected from this population simple random sampling method. Research data were collected using a questionnaire borne the name “leadership survey”, which consists of two parts including “personal information and information on institution where task is performed” and “effect of leadership characteristics of school principals on teachers’ performance”. Ethical, transformative, cultural, instructional and visionary leadership styles were discussed within the scope of research. The styles of “Ethical Leadership”, “Transformational Leadership”, “Cultural Leadership”, “Instructional Leadership” and “Visionary Leadership” discussed here have been found to have an effect upon teacher performance at the level of “I agree”. Five behaviors of each leadership characteristic were determined using factor analysis technique. It has been determined that behaviors of “behaving in accordance with what one has said”, “integrating moral principles and rules of conduct into school culture”, “showing respect for moral values and traditions” and “maintaining order and discipline necessary for an effective education and training” had an effect upon teacher performance at the level of “I quite agree”, behaviors of “creating an environment where teachers can learn the history of school” and “watching on site education-training by visiting the classes” at the level of “I partly agree” and the behaviors apart from these at the level of “I agree”
