The Perception of the Prophet in the Poetry of Muallim Naci
Abstract
This study aims to examine how the perception of the Prophet Muhammad is constructed through multiple layers of meaning in the poetry of Muallim Nâcî, a prominent poet of the Tanzimat era. As is well known, in classical poetry, the Prophet is positioned as both an authority and the most competent representative of moral perfection (kemâl), reflecting the tradition of Islamic thought.
However, the transformation within the Ottoman intellectual landscape following the Tanzimat moved this established position into a new context. The rise of an understanding of knowledge based on reason, experiment, and observation under the influence of Western thought—contrasted with the questioning of traditional metaphysical assumptions—necessitated a reconsideration of the nature of religious elements in literary texts. In this process, while some poets and writers pushed religious discourse into the background, others sought to reinterpret it within these new conditions.
In this regard, Muallim Nâcî stands out for both his adherence to the classical poetic tradition and his sensitivity to the intellectual debates of the period. The intensity of religious content in his poetry appears as a manifestation of a search for truth connected to tradition. It can be argued that the perception of the Prophet in Nâcî’s poetry largely maintained its foundational position from classical poetry, despite the ruptures introduced by the Tanzimat. By taking the relationship between the poet’s religious persona and his poetic preferences as a basis, this study evaluates both the na't poems and the prophetic references in his other works. The poetic texts are analyzed within the context of classical Islamic thought, Sufi concepts, and the Ottoman poetic tradition.
The findings indicate that the perception of the Prophet in Muallim Nâcî’s poetry is structured around three primary pillars: an ontological source of "light" (nur) that illuminates existence; an authority presented as the ultimate and most reliable criterion of knowledge; and the supreme representation of the "perfect human" (insân-ı kâmil) ideal. Furthermore, prophetic knowledge is prioritized over rational knowledge and presented as the most dependable source of truth, thereby establishing an epistemological superiority.
Another noteworthy aspect of Nâcî’s poetry is the portrayal of the Prophet as a metaphysical reality transcending the boundaries of time and space. This approach, largely shaped by Sufi terminology, demonstrates the poet’s profound connection to classical mystical thought. It can be argued that this connection also underlies the construction of religious experience in his poetry as an esoteric, internal process rather than a purely exoteric one.
Moreover, it is observed that Nâcî maintained the traditional epistemological hierarchy in the face of the reason-revelation (aql-wahy) debates that became prominent during the Tanzimat period. The preservation of a revelation-centered understanding of knowledge in his poems is significant, as it illustrates the continuity of classical thought despite the pressures of the modernization process. In conclusion, it can be stated that the perception of the Prophet in Muallim Nâcî’s poetry preserves the aesthetic and intellectual heritage of the classical na't tradition while simultaneously reinterpreting it within the intellectual conditions of his era.

Muallim Nâcî’nin Şiirlerinde Peygamber Algısı
Abstract
Peygamber’in kâinat düzeninin merkezinde yer alan metafizik bir hakikat şeklinde konumlandırıldığı fark edilmiştir.
Çalışma ayrıca Muallim Nâcî’nin, Tanzimat dönemiyle birlikte belirginleşen akıl-vahiy gerilimi karşısında klasik epistemolojik hiyerarşiyi muhafaza ettiğini ve vahyi aklın üstünde tuttuğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Yani Nâcî’nin şiirlerinde Hz. Peygamber’e dair algının, modernleşme sürecine rağmen klasik na’t geleneğiyle güçlü bir süreklilik ilişkisi içinde yeniden üretildiği söylenebilir.
