Education and Freedom from the viewpoint of Savater

Abstract

This study is a thought exercise on education, an endeavor that humans have undertaken for thousands of years and remains so. This study concentrates on the dual role of education. On the one hand, it is a process of internalization of learning and behavioral change and on the other, it relates to human’s desires, thoughts, actions, and will. In this study, we approach these two inseparable but seemingly contradictory concepts from the viewpoint of a Spanish educational philosopher, Fernando Savater’s two contemporary works. We try to show the similarities and differences of his thoughts on education and freedom from the mainstream historical framework. In other words, we hoped that the Western thought, which is the source of civilization in our time, be recognized in our world.
