From Application to Evaluation: Empathy as a Teaching Method Used in Social Studies Courses

Abstract

Empathy is defined as a capacity to feel, perceive, understand, and identify with another person’s needs, interests, and viewpoints. It is also very important in creating a quality classroom and/or school environment. In this context, studies have found that empathy helps develop sensitivity, tolerance, altruism, and respect for the differences. Thereby, empathy is considered as a skill that needs to be nurtured. It has its place in social studies curriculum in many developed countries. However, it has not been the case in Turkey until recent years. In the last curriculum reformation launched in 2004, empathy has been defined as one of the skills to be developed during the social studies courses. In this study, a large sample of emphatic activities regarding different social issues was conducted in different primary social studies classes. The discussion was focused on how to design and integrate activities that help develop emphatic skills among children. Also the criteria that can be used to assess students’ emphatics behaviors are presented and discussed in the light of students’ writings obtained during the empathy activities. Finally, two assessment tools were offered: An assessment form for teachers to assess students’ performance on empathic activities and a self-evaluation form for students.

Uygulama ve Değerlendirme Ölçütleriyle Hayat Bilgisi ve Sosyal Bilgiler Öğretiminde Kullanılabilecek Bir Öğretim Yöntemi Olarak Empati

Abstract

Empati kişinin kendisini bir başkasının yerine koyup onu duygu ve düşünce boyutlu anlama çabası olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Empati, nitelikli bir sınıf ve okul ortamı yaratmak için son derece önemlidir. Bu bağlamda araştırmalar, empatinin duyarlılık, hoşgörü, yardımlaşma, farklılığa rağmen karşı tarafın duruş noktasını anlama gibi önemli özellikleri gündeme getirdiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu bağlamda çağdaş gelişmiş ülkelerde empati, sosyal bilgiler öğretimi çerçevesinde öğrencilerde geliştirilmesi hedeşenen becerilerden biri olarak öğretim programlarında yer bulmuştur. Buna karşılık yakın zamanlara dek empati, Türk sosyal bilgiler programında yer almamıştır. Ülkemiz millî eğitim sisteminde son dönemde ayak sesleri duyulan ve çok geniş kapsamlı değişiklikleri gündeme getireceği anlaşılan yapısal dönüşüm, empatiyi geliştirilmesi gereken beceriler listesine eklemiştir. Bu çalışma, farklı ilköğretim sınışarında uygulanan ve farklı sosyal konular merkezinde gelişen empati etkinliklerinin değerlendirilmesi temelinde olacaktır. Öncelikle empati etkinliklerinin nasıl hazırlanacağı ve uygulanacağı üzerinde durulacaktır. Bundan başka öğrencilerin ürün örnekleri eşliğinde, empatilerin değerlendirilmesinde kullanılacak ölçütler de tanıtılacaktır. Son olarak da öğrencilerin kendilerini değerlendirmelerinde kullanılmak üzere Empati Ürünü Öz Değerlendirme Formu ile öğretmenlerin öğrencilerini değerlendirmeleri için Grup Değerlendirme Formu ekte sunulmuştur.
