Private School Withdrawal Decisions from Parental Perspectives: A Case Study

Abstract

This qualitative case study aims to deeply examine the key motivational factors behind school withdrawal decisions at Ege Private School's preschool, primary, middle, and high school levels, from a parental perspective. Content analysis of semi-structured interviews with 49 parents reveals that school withdrawal stem from a complex interplay of economic, academic, administrative, and social factors. High tuition fees, concerns about academic quality, and ineffective communication with parents emerged as common problems across all educational levels. While costs and academic dissatisfaction were dominant in preschool and primary school, social issues such as a lack of exam-focused education and bullying were decisive in middle and high school. Although the school's foreign language education and physical facilities offered strengths, administrative shortcomings and disciplinary problems overshadowed these advantages. The study is positioned within the context of parental decisions and student loss in the private school setting, rather than within the context of the school withdrawal literature. Transparent pricing, academic program improvements, and strong anti-bullying policies are recommended to increase retention.

Ebeveyn Perspektifinden Özel Okuldan Ayrılma Kararları: Bir Durum Çalışması

Abstract

Bu nitel durum çalışması, Özel Ege Okulu'nun okul öncesi, ilkokul, ortaokul ve lise kademelerinde öğrencilerin özel okuldan ayrılma kararlarını şekillendiren temel belirleyici etkenleri ebeveyn perspektifinden derinlemesine incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Toplam 49 veli ile yapılan yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmelerin içerik analizi, özel okuldan ayrılma kararlarının ekonomik, akademik, yönetimsel ve sosyal etkenlerin karmaşık etkileşimiyle şekillendiğini göstermektedir. Tüm eğitim düzeylerinde yüksek okul ücretleri, akademik niteliğe ilişkin endişeler ve velilerle etkisiz iletişim ortak sorunlar olarak öne çıkmıştır. Okul öncesi ve ilkokulda maliyetler ve akademik tatminsizlik baskınken, ortaokul ve lisede sınav odaklı eğitim eksikliği ve zorbalık gibi sosyal sorunlar belirleyici olmuştur. Okulun yabancı dil eğitimi ve fiziksel olanakları güçlü yönler sunsa da, yönetimsel yetersizlikler ve disiplin sorunları bu avantajları gölgelemiştir. Çalışma, okul terki olgusundan farklı olarak, öğrencilerin eğitim sisteminden kopuşunu değil; özel okuldan ayrılma, okul değiştirme ve ebeveyn karar verme süreçlerini merkeze alan bir çerçevede konumlandırılmaktadır. Kalıcılığı artırmak için şeffaf fiyatlandırma, akademik program iyileştirmeleri ve güçlü zorbalıkla mücadele politikaları önerilmektedir.
