SEMBOLİZM BAĞLAMINDA ANTİK ÇAĞ’DAN BUGÜNE “LİTUUS”

Abstract

Tarih süresince doğası gereği insanlar nesnelere kendilerine göre anlamlar yüklemiştir. Bu şekilde nesneleri sembolleştirerek toplumları içinde güç elde etmeye çalışmışlardır. Güç elde etme ve belli bir ideoloji uğruna sembolleştirilen nesnelerden biri de ucu kıvrık sopa anlamına gelen “lituus”tur. Latince bir kelime olan “lituus”un ilk anlamı çobanlara ait bir sopa olmasıdır. Hayvanları yönlendirmede kolaylık sağlaması açısından geçmişten günümüze kadar kullanılagelmiştir. Zamanla çobanlık mesleği tanrısallık ile bağlantılı gösterilerek sıradan bir çoban sopası olan “lituus” dönüşüm geçirmiştir. Bu dönüşüm sonucu “lituus” tanrıların, bilicilerin, din adamlarının ve yöneticilerin asası haline gelerek ikincil anlamını kazanmıştır. “Lituus’un” asa olarak kullanımı da tıpkı çoban sopası gibi uzun süre olmuştur. “Lituus” son anlamını ise Roma döneminde kazanmıştır. Roma döneminde nefesli bir müzik aleti olarak törenlerde ve orduda kullanılmıştır. Bu müzik aletinin çıkardığı bir yandan ilahi bir yandan ürkütücü ses nedeniyle farklı toplumlarda da gerek düşmana korku salma gerekse zafer vurgusu yapma amacıyla var olmaya devam etmiştir. Hala müzikte çalınması oldukça zor olan bu müzik aletinin çıkardığı tını, gizemli etkisini korumaya devam etmektedir. Makalede özü gereği sembolleştiren bir varlık olarak insanın “lituus” kelimesine ne anlamlar yüklediği, onu nasıl ilk amacından farklı bir anlama dönüştürdüğü ele alınmıştır. Birbirinden farklı gibi görünen bu anlamların aslında tek bir nokta olan insanın toplumda güç elde etme amacında toplandığı görülmektedir.

“LITUUS” FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE PRESENT IN THE CONTEXT OF SYMBOLISM

Abstract

Throughout history, people have attributed meanings to objects by their nature. In this way, they tried to gain power in their societies by symbolizing objects. One of the objects symbolized for the sake of gaining power and a certain ideology is the “lituus”, which means a curved stick. The first, meaning of the Latin word “lituus” is a shepherd’s stick. It has been used from the past to the present in order to provide convenience in directing animals. Over time, the shepherd’s profession was shown to be connected with divinity, and the ordinary shepherd’s stick, the “lituus” underwent a transformation. As a result of this transformation, the “lituus” became the scepter of the gods, seers, clergy, the rulers and gained its secondary meaning. The use of the “lituus” as a scepter has been around for a long time like the shepherd’s stick. “Lituus” gained its last meaning in the Roman period. It was used in ceremonies and in the army as a wind musical instrument. Due to the divine and frightening sound produced by this musical instrument, it continued to exist in different societies with the aim of both instilling fear in the enemy and emphasizing victory. The timbre of this musical instrument, which is still very diffucult to play in music, continues to preserve its mysterious effect. In the article, it is discussed what meanings humans, as a symbolizing being by nature, attribute to the word "lituus" and how they transform it into a meaning different from its original purpose. It is seen that these meanings, which seem to be different from each other, are actually gathered around a single point, which is the human being's aim to gain power in society.
