IMAGE OF IMAM IN TURKISH CINEMA FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF PSYCHOLOGY OF VALUES: SEMANTIC ANALYSES IN THE CONTEXT OF 'VALUE-DEPRIVED RELIGIOSITY' TYPOLOGY
Abstract
Theological
themes have been used actively in all visual aspects of the art from the past
until today. The movies in which imams take place in the scenario based on
religion theme are occasionally made in the cinema that is one of the visual
arts. In this article, the image of imam in Turkish cinema has been analyzed in
the context of 'value-deprived religiosity' typology as a new typology of
religiosity from the perspective of the psychology of religion and values. In
this context, psycho-socio-theological background of the image of imam, lacking
the sensitivity of religious and ethical values in Turkish cinema on the basis
of 'value-deprived religiosity' typology is semantically analyzed on the basis
of particular movie sample (n=4). According to the results of the research,
using document review and content analysis as a qualitative methodology, it has
become obvious that (i) the imam in Turkish cinema is deliberately described as
'rapist, dishonest, trickster, gambler, materialist, away from the religious
and community leadership' by the cinema actors who are against religion; (ii)
the approach of Turkish cinema, including the negative stereotypes about the
profession, has coincided with the semantic content of the value-deprived
religiosity typology which is a new model in the literature; (iii) Turkish
cinema against religion has produced an image of imam who has the
value-deprived religiosity typology in such a way that is against the values of
religious and vocational identity.
