Results of Monthly Radon Measurements in Thermal Water at Evliya Çelebi Campus of Kütahya Dumlupınar University

Abstract

This paper presents the findings of a study that measured radon levels in spa water at the Kütahya Dumlupınar University campus over a period of several months. The E-Perm method was utilized to determine the radon concentrations, and the results were analyzed. The radiation to which humans are exposed is largely derived from natural radioactivity. Radon gas, a product of natural radioactivity, poses a threat to human health and can be present in high concentrations in living and working environments. In this regard, the monitoring of radon gas in the environments where people work and live is important for health. In this study, measurements of radon gas in the thermal water at the Evliya Çelebi Campus of Kütahya Dumlupınar University were made, and the results were reported. The measurements were repeated 6 times, once a month, between 20.01.2023-20.06.2023. The measurements were carried out using the E-Perm, a passive method. The radon concentration measurement results are in the range of 78.92 to 96.53 Bq/L. Calculations of the radiation dose received from drinking the spa water and the radiation dose received from the inhalation of radon released from the water were made based on the measurement results and tabulated. The results reported in this study contribute to the database of radon measurements in thermal waters in the region.
