ÜRGÜP KARLIK VILLAGE NO. 1 CHURCH AND CONSTRUCTION COMPLEX

Abstract

No. 1 church and building complex is located 20 km east of Nevşehir, nearly 15 km South of Ürgüp and in the west side of Karlık Village. This complex, which is in the third level of the cave settlement from top to bottom and we can evaluate as a monastery, consists of spaces carved into rock masses lined up alongside in the north south direction. It includes a main church in cross-in-square plan in the furthest north, a paracclesion in cross plan in the south and two spaces in the north. Towards the south of the main church, there is a large single-space barn, a trapeza including a wine workshop in it, a meeting hall, storehouses, a wine workshop and a cistern. It appears that the church was built in the most sheltered place of the complex and other spaces were placed according to the church. The main purpose of this study is to document the architectural features of the Karlık Village No. 1 church and building complex in detail, to create survey drawings of the structures, to analyze the positioning, to make a comparative evaluation with similar examples and to date the complex periodically in the light of all these findings. The study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the structure of the monastery complex, located within the settlement of Cappadocia, and, in the case of Karlık, to provide new and original data on 10th-century Byzantine provincial architecture and monastic life.

ÜRGÜP KARLIK KÖYÜ 1 NOLU KİLİSE VE YAPI KOMPLEKSİ

Abstract

1 Nolu Kilise ve yapı kompleksi, Nevşehir’in 20 km doğusunda Ürgüp’ün yaklaşık 15 km güneyinde Karlık köyünün batı yakasında yer almaktadır. Kaya yerleşiminin en üstten alta doğru üçüncü kademesinde bulunan ve manastır olarak değerlendirebileceğimiz bu kompleks, kuzey güney doğrultuda yan yana sıralan kaya kütlelerine oyulmuş mekanlardan oluşmaktadır. En kuzeyinde kapalı Yunan haçı planında bir ana kilise, güneyinde bulunan haç planlı bir parekklesion ve kuzeyinde iki mekânı içerir. Ana kilisenin güneyine doğru tek mekânlı büyük bir ahır, içinde şarap işliğini barındıran bir trapeza, bir toplantı salonu, depolar, şarap işliği ve sarnıç bulunmaktadır. Kompleksin en korunaklı yerine kilisenin yapıldığı ve diğer mekânların kiliseye göre yerleştirildiği anlaşılmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, Karlık Köyü 1 No’lu kilise ve yapı kompleksinin mimari özelliklerinin ayrıntılı biçimde belgelenmesi, yapıların rölöve çizimlerinin oluşturulması, konumlanışının analiz edilmesi, benzer örneklerle karşılaştırmalı bir değerlendirme yapılması ve bütün bu bulgular ışığında kompleksin dönemsel olarak tarihlendirilmesidir. Çalışma, Kapadokya’nın kırsal yerleşimi içinde yer alan manastır kompleksinin yapısının daha iyi anlaşılmasına katkı sağlamayı; Karlık örneği özelinde ise 10. yüzyıl Bizans mimarisine ve monastik yaşama ilişkin yeni ve özgün veriler sunmayı hedeflemektedir.
