GENDER DISCRIMINATION AND MOTIVATION IN WORKPLACE: THE MEDIATOR ROLE OF ORGANISATIONAL BELONGING AND BASIC PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS
Abstract
Gender equality encompasses equal access to opportunities, resources, and services, as well as freedom of choice, regardless of an individual's gender. Although women's presence in various fields has increased over time, it has been observed that gender equality has not been fully achieved. This study examines the relationship between gender discrimination experienced by women in the workplace and their levels of amotivation in their professional lives. The study also separately examines the mediation roles of organizational belonging and the satisfaction of basic psychological needs in this relationship. The study was conducted with 457 female participants working in different sectors. Data collection tools are ‘Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction and Frustration Scale’, ‘Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale’, ‘Perception of Organisational Belonging Scale’, ‘The Workplace Gender Discrimination Scale’ and ‘Sociodemographic Information Form’. The findings reveal a significant relationship between increasing discrimination and increasing amotivation. Furthermore, the mediation roles of organizational belonging and satisfaction of psychological needs in this relationship have been identified. The results are discussed in the context of relevant research findings and theories.
