Abstract

Abstract
Adopting an evolutionary psychological perspective, the adaptive memory framework posits that information directly related to fitness or processed in fitness-relevant contexts is more likely to be remembered. Consistent with this prediction, studies have shown that processing information for its survival relevance enhances memory performance (survival processing effect; SPE). This review begins by outlining the theoretical foundations of the adaptive memory approach and highlights how it contrasts with the traditional framework in memory research. It then focuses on studies examining the replicability of the SPE and its generalizability across different stimuli, research designs, memory mechanisms, and sample groups. The review also introduces various proximate mechanisms underlying the SPE and addresses key criticisms of the adaptive memory framework. It further explores arguments from evolutionary-minded researchers responding to these critiques. Finally, the review expands this discussion and critically assesses these counterarguments. The primary goal of this review is to contribute to the national literature and provide guidance to researchers investigating the role of nature’s criterion in memory processes.
