Scientific Realism and Kalām: Discovering Unobservable Truths with al-Māturīdī

Abstract

This article aims to support the assertion that scientific realism is implied by a key approach in Islamic theology. This is based on identifying the common principles of theorizing in both science and philosophical kalām. We aim to demonstrate that theological questions concerning unobservable entities overlap with those in the philosophy of science, and that one’s position in theology will largely influence the stance one adopts regarding scientific realism. To substantiate this claim, the approach of Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī, one of the most prominent figures in Islamic theology, is examined. The empiricist approach adopted by al-Māturīdī is highlighted, first by noting his scepticism about the existence of several unobservable entities, such as essences and basic substrata. Secondly, al-Māturīdī’s empiricist inclination is demonstrated through his natural theology and his arguments in support of human freedom. Lastly, the principle of inference to the best explanation, which is employed in both science and theology, supports the claim that a parallel to scientific realism exists in Islamic theology. If the approach adopted to provide proof for the existence of God is accepted, then a realist stance regarding natural unobservable entities must also be embraced.

Bilimsel Gerçekçilik ve Kelâm: Gözlemlenemeyen Hakikatleri Mâtürîdî ile Keşfetmek

Abstract

Bu makale, bilimsel gerçekçiliğin kelâm ilminin mühim bir yaklaşımıyla uyuştuğu ve bu yaklaşımı desteklediği iddiasını doğrulamayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu gerekçelendirme ise bilimde ve kelâmda teorileştirmenin ortak prensiplerinin tanımlanmasına dayanmaktadır. Bu açıdan çalışma, görünmeyen varlıklarla ilgili kelâmî soruların bilim felsefesindeki sorularla örtüştüğünü ve kelâmda benimsenen pozisyonun, bilimsel gerçekçilik konusundaki duruşu büyük ölçüde belirleyeceğini savunmaktadır. Bu iddiayı temellendirmek için kelâm ilminin en önemli isimlerinden biri olan Ebû Mansûr el-Mâtürîdî’nin yaklaşımı ele alınmaktadır. Öncelikle, Mâtürîdî’nin benimsemiş olduğu tecrübi yaklaşım, ilk olarak mahiyetler ve cevherler gibi görünmeyen varlıkların varlığına yönelik şüpheciliğiyle ve ikinci olarak, Tanrı ispatları ve insanın hür iradesini tasdik eden argümanlarıyla gösterilmektedir. Son olarak, hem bilimde hem de kelâmda kullanılan en iyi açıklama çıkarımı prensibi, İslâm kelâmında bilimsel gerçekçilikle bir paralellik bulunduğu iddiasını temellendirmektedir. Neticede, kelâmda örneklendiği gibi, Allah’ın varlığını ispat etmek için kullanılan yaklaşım kabul edilirse, gözlemlenemez tabii varlıklara yönelik gerçekçi bir yaklaşımın da kabul edilmesi gerekir.
