FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING TO YOUNG LEARNERS THROUGH POETRY

Abstract

Literature is one of the most important elements of foreign language teaching. As a part of culture, literature taking place in English languageteaching contributes to students in different ways. As reading, understanding and studying literary works require to be at high levels forthe students both at language and literary competence, literature cannottake place in the beginning level foreign language classes at primaryschools. Young learners and teenagers will enjoy the literary texts which arecarefully chosen and appropriate to the level of the students and which arepresented through interesting activities. In this way, not only students’ motivation can be increased but also students can develop love and gain attention to literature. To promote awareness in the field of literature, short children poems, relevant to the language level and interests of the childrencan be used in foreign language classes. In this work, supported with different language activities, the use of poetry will be exemplified for thebeginning level students of foreign language teaching at primary schools
